After basic training at Morecambe, I was posted to FILTON on ground defence of the Bristol Air-craft Works and its ajacent air-field. After a spell of several months in-activity the Camp and Air-field was subjected to an intense day-light raid by German bombers. A large number of bombs with delayed fuses were dropped, their intention was to stop or delay the production of the new Bristol Beaufighter but in less than 1hr the bomb craters had been filled in and the Emergency Services were at work...I don't remember sleeping for the next four days unless it was whilst I was stood up...the rest of the time was spent recording and reporting to Control Room each new exploding bomb...several mates suffered damaged ear-drums and were later to be discharged. Myself and others were offered training courses I asked for re-training as Flt Mech and Fitter 1E after which I was posted to Haverigg, a wilderness on the Cumberland coast.
