The war in the east had just ended. The ship had sailed from Singapore to Colombo where we had re-victualled, and set sail for Alexandria. We had orders to travel at slow speed until all available troopships had passed us on the way to Blighty. When we arrived in the Arabian sea the P O W ships were already miles ahead so we were sailing at normal speed, and routine. At the moment we had settled down to normal routine once again. Nothing wrong 鈥 very cosy! Or was it? No!
In the middle of the night I was awakened by something with me in my hammock, so I reached down and found something, which was somewhat similar to the cat. By this time, I was fully awake and jumped down, found the cat and put it in with the rat, and my messmates were all gathered round. The cat finally jumped down having killed the rat. We picked up the rat in a newspaper and threw it overboard and we watched the unwanted 鈥減et鈥 float past 鈥 Phew! Thank goodness.
