The year was 1942, I was just fourteen years old at the time and I went to work for a company called the Clifford Aero in Hoobrook, Kidderminster. It was an old mill situated in the shadow of the railway viaduct. My job was to stamp numbers on to parts for Lancaster bombers.
It was a happy time, quite a family affair, my uncle Perce worked along side me on the assembly line, my aunt Dinah used to spray the aeroplane parts, aunt Joan worked in the machine shop and last but not least,my auntie Bess was the cook and used to serve us scrumptious meals despite food shortages.
We were helped along by the radio with programmes like Workers Playtime and Bing Crosby with his White Christmas and all that jazz. We worked from 8am to 6 pm and in our leisure time we formed a song and dance troupe and put on a variety shows in village halls around Kidderminster. We didn't have much in the way of costumes but made things out of crepe paper and blackout material. We were quite succesful and our boss Mr.Kimberley, decided to take over and called us "The Cliffodeons" and supplied us with spotlights and microphones, etc. He also had the factory workers making steel taps for our dancing shoes in the machine shop. He made sure everyone helped and in all we made quite a bit of money for charity especially for the British Red Cross.
