I was a guide in the Christ church guide company Watford Hertfordshire. I was a patrol leader in the Robin patrol. We did a lot of marching, first aid, hiking we used to make a small camp fire in the woods and cooked potatoes sometimes an egg or sausage if rations permitted. We used to go and have a big parade on Empire Day and all youth organisations used to take part. I can remember a guide rally either in Rickmansworth or Uxbridge where four of use who were patrol leaders attended being the only one having a purse I held all the money, needless to say I lost the purse so we all had to walk home lucky there was no air raid that night. We used to help by running errands for people and my job on a Saturday was to queue up at local butchers for half a pound of sausages, then further up the high street to another butchers for another half a pound of sausages, because clothing was rationed I could not buy new uniform so we were allowed to wear a navy blue skirt over our very short guide uniform dress. The hats remained the same and we had to iron the brim until it was stiff with a damp cloth. Although we couldn鈥檛 go camping we used to make the most of our days out in the woods providing there were no air raids and our gas masks went everywhere with us.
