Our Anderson shelter was supplied and erected for us just before the War started.It was made to take 7 persons, as in addition to my parents and myself, there was a family of 4 adults upstairs. It took up about a quarter of the small back garden of our Victorian semi-detached house.(Sadly, early on in the war, they took our lovely wrought iron railings away, never to be replaced.)
Of course, the authorities had not planned on people sleeping in such shelters,so it was just as well that our upstairs tenants moved out as soon as the War started,leaving us with this over-sized shelter,into which bunk beds could be fitted.
The air raids started in earnest around September 1940. Throughout that autumn and winter the waling of the sirens could be heard as regularly as clockwork so it seemed at around dusk.Our dog led the way down to the shelter and my parents followed with me and our provisions for the night. As far as I can remember, our heating and lighting came from a Valor oil stove and a small oil lamp. I amused myself----to be continued
