This story about measles is not the main issue. It turned out that people ,although real enemies, sometimes did not behave as was expected of them.
One morning I was called to go and help out in Peds. as they were really busy.
When I got there I was told to take care of the kids with measles.I went to the nurse in charge and told her that I never had the measles. She looked at me and said:"I am sure you must have had the measles.Every child has had the measles before the age you are now".
"No, I never had them, honestly!" In the Dutch Indies kids never got measles( till after the Jap.occupation we learned later.) Nursing Service was called and I had to stay in Peds with the measles
So I did .But on Jan 6th '43 I woke up feeling terrible. My room mate went to the hospital and said that I was so sick that I couldn't come to work. They were going to check it out.
I ended up being carried down on a stretcher to the Pavillion of Infectious Diseases.I got a room with all the necessary equipment to keep me inside. The physician who took care of the nurses was very nice guy and Jewish. We all knew it .How did he land in a hospital like this one where half of the beds were taken over by the Germans? These German M.D.s were middleaged and from the Wehrmacht so not SS or the more vicious out fits.Quite often the German M.D. in charge did rounds with Ch. v. D .- our docter- discussing problems with a patient either one had.-I was not discussed except that I was too old to have the measles.-I had my small Philips radio on my nightstand hidden under a towel and a large map of Russia where the the battle of Stalingrad was fought.
One night I woke up shivering,I felt really sick. The R.N who took care of me called Ch. v. D out of bed. What was going on?My temp. shot up to 106.4. Everything was crystal clear,I heard the staff talking:One said:"Lets call the priest, i don't think she'll make it."I said:"I heard that!I am not going to die (That hospital padre was a local guy, with a heavy local accent. When he was called for the last rites he went up to the patient, pinched the patient in the upper arm and said loud:"Do you feel me pinching you?"Depending on the answer, the patient got or did not get the last rites.)My temp must have slowly gone down after they put icepacks in my arm pits and groins. But the I really felt terrible.Morning came and the different dr's, including the German one, held a conference outside my door.Several tests were run,but my temp stayed upThe German m.d. gave my md..d sulfa tablets to bring down what they said must have been a bacterial infection This was a new medicine. Then it was decided that a sternum puncture should be performed to see whether the marrow showed any abnormalities.Another one who had taken refuge in this hospital was a Russian Female M.D who worked in the Lab. She was tall and and a person of few words. I was prepped:No Local, No shots to make me woosey. The only words she said to me was:"Just lie very still".!Well I thought I was nailed to the bed:It HURT!!The procedure over,I still did not get anything to make me feel better except for a bowl of jello. The different doctors in attendance outside my room disappeared. The result of the puncture was NEG.
After the war my husband and I visited Ch. v. D who was in charge of a largeTB hospital and we asked how it was possible that he and the female Russian M.D.. did not get hauled off to a concentration camp? Ch.said:" the German M.D.'s in charge were decent fellows,no followers of Hitler and the staff was told that their job was to take care of patients and not jeopardize that care by sending good
people to concentration camps."I always wondered whether this humane M.D .survived the war.

Hello Elvira,Just read your note and it suddenly disappeared This happened before,so... I'll start again.I think we are getting along swimmingly-if that is a right expression-.I met so many nice people already.I wished Frank would return. He was my first contact: a patient listener, funny and a good source of info.
Yesterday I read a note from a German woman/girl.She said she was German and probably has some sense of guilt. When I wrote the" measle story" I thought of her and if she ever it she must know that we met good Germans too, although during the occupation we thought otherwise.
I'ii wait for your "epistle"(we use the same expression inHolland)Have to do some cleaning as it is going to be very hot-92 degrees-I can't wait till september when the rains come hopefully.-and in that heat the only thing enjoyable is to sit on the deck with a glass of icecold lemonade,a good book , Hickory my Cairn Terrier, at my feet and just vegetate.
It is hot in Holland right now, possibly humid too
.When I was there last year I coudn't read in bed at nite:NO SCREENS in the windows as we have here. All the livestock with wings paid me a visit.talk to uou later.Josephine

Hello Josephine,
I have had an awful job trying to find where to write to you and Rob. I can understand what I wrote but I doubt if she will! I just hope she will reply. I have been reading your letters to each other and found them fascinating. You both describe things so beautifully giving the reader more than a glimpse into your lives. I hope neither of you mind. I think of you both as friends.
I'm glad you liked my pieces on MY war in Swansea. Makes me ashamed though when I read of the horrors you and Rob and so many others lived through.
Sorry this is short but I will write more next time. "I am gasping for a cup of tea." That is very British! I say British as opposed to English as I am Welsh. (With a weird sense of humour.)<cappuccino> Had to put smiley of coffee, they hadn't one for tea.
Bye
Love Elvira

Elvira, I just read your note to me and the one you wrote to Anak B.She is very busy with family visiting. She told me that she could'nt write to me.So, just wait till she finds you.
I know English and British are different.Aren't the Welsh unhappy when they are called English??
Not much news righ now.I have to water my plants as it is going to be mighty hot the next few days. Next week I'll be out of town with my granddaughter for about 6 days or so.If you don't hear from me before I go I'll contact you when I'm back.OK??.Taqke care.j.

Hello Elvira, cyfaill newydd! Anak-Bandung (that's me, Rob) is no longer busy with her relatives. The wedding is over and I have been nursing a champagne hangover <headhurts>. The Dutch visitors have gone back home.
I was just trawling through Josephine's site to see whether she had finally added some more to her memoires, saw her nursing story and hey presto, I saw my name taken in vain @'.'@ .
I could not reply straight away as I wanted to read your stories first. I enjoyed them very much and could imagine how it was while I was reading it.
My husband Jack was born in Shotton and remembers sheltering under the wooden kitchen table, a special sturdy one. Of course, with the steelworks there, he had his share of crouching underneath. He has a special place for Wales and although he isn't a true blue one (or rather red for the dragon!) his heart is there. He ended up in Pen-y-ffordd where I met his parents for the first time in 1965. We have been back there for the local eistedfod where he was asked to hand out the special shield.
I had to giggle when i read about you dancing the jitterbug. Were you <flyhi> over the young service man's shoulder?
Vriendin Josephine, it looks as we three could meet here under the nursing umbrella, unless we have a special heading. Any catching heading ideas?
Seh Non, do you have to travel far to your granddaughter? Celebrating your birthday there?
And of course the Welsh are unhappy <grr> to be called English, although we Dutch call all the British 'Engels'. don't we, Josephine? So you better watch out how you address Elvira.
Keep the good works up, my friends, by writing more. I am afraid I have no personal contributions to make as I cannot remember anything from that period. I have been busy translating my mother's memories, they start from when she was five years old and seems to have an idyllic childhood. She has also been an extremely big handful of a child!
I'd better stop now. Hope to speak to you both.
As there are no icons for a tulip (the Dutch emblem) here is a @->-- for Elvira and one @->-- for Josephine

Hi Josephine,
I've just read a story of Java about a Dutch lady, written yesterday. It is long but heart rending.
Details: HOW I LOST MY BEST FRIEND
by sonnyjim/Mike Nellis ID2859276
I have let Rob know the details too and hope one of you, at least will see it. Could you let me know if you see it.
Thanks Love Elvira

Hi both
Read Elizabeth's story. Wasn't it moving? It made me ache for my mother again. So much sadness is bubbling up from all these stories, but at the same time it must be a catharsis being able to tell them after having to keep quiet for so long.
I have been in touch with Elizabeth and although her story was written by sonnyjim/Mike Nellis, she has her own personal page, though it is rather empty. I have asked her why she did not tell her story herself, for her English is good. You can pick her up from my personal page.

Hello Daffy,I thought that I find it easier to click on "Nursing" to contact you.I just wrote Tulip, 1 a long letter, but it is also for you of course.
How are your teeth?Still hurting?I can't identify with it as I never had a toothache in my life.Lucky me..Tulip1 is yanking some hairs out. What a drag!
I hope you feel better.
I saw a funny statement. When one is incapacitated one can get a Sign to park close to the store. But is is abused. The thing I read was:STUPIDITY IS NOT A HANDICAP:Park elsewhere!
Another funny remark is:FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.It comes bundled with the software.
Today is Aug. 5 12.00 PDT.Forgot to mention that in Tulip 1's letter. When you get phone messages and one forgets to tell day and time, one can go around in circles and never find out when it was sent.
Not much news,I escape in e-mailing so I can wait with my house work and exercises..
Read the note I sent to Tulip1 for any "news".It must be about getting bed time for you or is that too early??
Take care,I have to go and hunt for my "Smileys",I copied them and parked them somewhere but havn't found them yet.Love daffy from Tulip2.

Hi,Honey, Sunday 8th Aug.
TULIP 2. I have just found your, I think, last message to me. I am getting very confused, not that that is difficult for me. It is so hot and humid that I can't concentrate. I must remember to date my missives. Didn't want you to think you were forgotten. I don't know if you found my last notes, I MUST date them.
We will get it all sorted soon. I am off to bed, perchance to dream. That reminds me, Josephine, I dreamt about you last night. We were at a dining table with all your family in the States. can't remember anymore!
Goodnight, my dear
Love, Princess Daffodil.
