It was September 1939. The pupils of St St James Church School in Derby were evacuated to Chellaston - three miles away. We were lined up in the local village Hall - all with our names on luggage-type labels. The people who were prepared to take a loveable child then eyed us up and down and said "we'll have that one". Myself and a friend were chosen by a husband and wife who had no children, but lived in a beautiful house. We had never had it so good, particularly as our new "parents" were one of the top fruiterers in Derby. All this happened on a Friday. The next morning, Saturday, we were told to take a short walk down the lane, so we did - and what did we see? Our first aeroplane!! In the ditch - nose first. It was a tiger moth. Just fancy - we had been evacuated to escape danger and here less than 100yards from our new home was a crashed plane.
The next day ,on Sunday, at 11am everyone listened to the wireless to here Neville Chamberlain say we were now at WAR with Germany. Our mothers fetched us home after a couple of weeks much to our dismay - I have loving memories of fresh raspberries and cream - lovely.
