I was reading a book written by a [fellow] Kiwi Wing Commander, and read about the demise of an ancestor-I have been trying to find out more... It happened that on 24.05.1944, 3 Typhoons attacked a German Radar installation in this area-the 2nd aircraft had it's tail shot off by flak, but attempted to discharge it's rockets then evade the target-the 3rd Typhoon [my ancestor] in trying to avoid the damaged 2nd aircraft, collided with it, and both crashed into the base of the installation, which was destroyed also. He was a Flight Sgt, but CWGC records state he was a Pilot Officer-Any information on him and Next of Kin [from Billingham, Co. Durham,] much appreciated....

Message 1 - Typhoon Pilot Ancestor

Posted on: 18 December 2003 by Andy Parkinson

Both aircraft were from 198 Sqn, MN410 flown by Flying Officer Freeman (Canadian) and JR527 flown by F/Sgt E. Vallely. The attack was against the radra site at Jobourg situated on the NW tip of the Cherbourg peninsula. Accounts state that MN410 was hit by 37mm flak which shot off the tail, the pilot managed to keep control and released his rockets but on trying to clear the target collided with JR527 killing both pilots.
Hope this helps.
Andrew
