It was 鈥渨ings for victory week鈥 ( Everyone was encouraged to invest in national savings ) as part of the celebrations the local air force commander ( from Tilesford ) sent a cricket team down to play the locals on the 鈥 Bottoms 鈥 ( The local pitch ) He also arranged a fly past across the edge of the cricket ground. They were coming from the NW in single line and when the third bomber was level with the pavilion the port engine and wing broke away from the fuselage. The wing dropped about fifty feet from me. This blew me over. The engine spiralled out and landed in a tree 200 yds away. The rest of the plane passed over me and collapsed into the Avon behind the Brandy Cask and caught fire. Needless to say I was scared out of my wits. It was amazing that as far as I know no one apart from the crew was killed.
The cricket match was abandoned.
