When I was a little boy and just returned from India I went to live in the Village of Dordon. One night when German bombers were hitting Birmingham land mines were dropped on our village destroying whole streets and killing many. My aunty Flo had come from East Anglia to have her new baby. My brother had been evacuated so I was alone in the middle of the night whilst I could hear screaming from the next bedroom. I was frightened because I did not know what was happening I learned later that it was Aunty Flo in labour with Jeremy. At the height of the midwife鈥檚 activities next door German bombers dropped their land mines on the village. As I cowed under the bed they exploded and every window and my side of the house caved in. I wet myself and screamed louder than Aunty Flo next door. In the morning they found me still under that bed refusing to come out. I was taken to see the new baby and can remember the red glow in the sky and the smell of cordite. Later that day I saw all the demolished houses. Many little friends were missing from school when I went again.
