We had no televisions then of course. We only had a wireless radio and often Lord Haw-Haw was on. 鈥淭his is Lord Haw-Haw speaking!鈥 is what he used to say. He used to claim many things, like the Germans were winning the war and they were doing this and that. It was a whole load of propaganda.

Message 1 - Lord Haw-Haw

Posted on: 28 June 2005 by Peter - WW2 Site Helper

With respect, you are referring to the British Nazi, William Joyce. His broadcasts started on 18 September, 1939, and continued until the end of April, 1945; he was later hanged for treason.

However, he never called himself "Lord Haw-Haw", nor did he ever start his broadcast with "This is Lord Haw-Haw speaking". 'Lord Haw-Haw' was a nickname coined in 1939 by the Daily Express radio critic 'Jonah Barrington'; it quickly caught on. Joyce always began his broadcast with "Germany calling, Germany calling".

Regards,

Peter
