During heavy shelling from the Germans near Monte Casino, my father, Michael Anthony McKendrick, fell into a cellar with three others. It was full of wine! They stayed there for a week and drank the lot. When they surfaced the front line had moved 10 miles. They claimed they were trapped and were, "disappointed that no-one had heard them shouting 'Help!'".
