We were a group of Petty Officer radio mechanics in the Women’s Royal Naval Services, based in Scarborough and we serviced wireless receivers.
They were used by the interceptors to pick up messages sent out by the German U-Boats on their Enigma machines, which were then sent to Bletchley Park for decoding. (we now know)
I can recall our excitement when we gathered to hear Mr Churchill’s new on the wireless that the war had finally ended. We all danced in the streets of Scarborough and celebrated — I’m sure in one or two pubs too.
Eventually I returned to my home in Surbiton, and was reunited with my family
