I was born in a village called Khapa, in Nagpur in the state of Maharashta. I was 5 years old when my father joined the Army, he was 21. Some people from the government came to our village, to ask for people to join the army. He signed up along with 3 other men.
He joined the Bengal Engineers and went to fight in Burma. He came home to visit two or three times and my younger sister and I were very pleased to see him.
Because I was so young, he didn't tell me very much about what he did in the Army, but I remember him telling me that it was very strict and very hard work.
He was discharged in 1946, the government offered him a job in the Fire Service but he wanted to run his own business. He ran a hand loom saree business from home. I helped him after I left school at the age of 14.
I would like to find out more about the Bengal Engineers and what my father did in the war.
