I was a child during the war, I was 6 years old when war broke out. We were living in Stanford Hill and the whole school, it was a Jewish school we were evacuated in September. I was one of the children with the token gas mask we were taken to Letchworth. We were all assembled in a hall, we were all given foster homes. I was homed in a doctor's home but they became ill and my brother and I went to another home which was not so nice. We had to indoors from Sunday night to Saturday, my parents had been bombed out of their homes in London, we eventually went there. I was put in another school in Ruislip, it was the time when children had school milk. We were allowed one third of a pint for one child. It was my job to measure out the exact measurement of milk. I then went to Chiswick High School which was an hour's journey. At the time I was having a lot of dental treatment so I was going from Chiswick to King's Cross. One day I found on the steps of the clinic a watch so I took it home. When I got to school the next day and it was discovered that I had a watch, it was very rare, I was given the job in school to ring the bell because I had the watch. Classes were held in temporary buildings and I was at school until I was 16 that would have been 1949.
