This story was told by Lesley Kirkwood about her mother Jean Telfer.
My mother lived in Edinburgh during the war and worked fro two days in a munitions factory. She hated it. Somehow, she got transferred to the land army and with another girl became a Land Girl. I think my mother thought that she would be feeding lambs, but the hard work came as quite a surprise. There were some men still working on the farm and they thought it would be funny to send the girls into a field to cut thistles, which unknown to the girls also contained the largest bull in the whole of Scotland!
According to my mother she and her friend could have beaten an Olympic champion in the hurdles in their effort to escape the charging bull.
This proved to be her last day on the farm and she returned to civvy street.
