FOOD FROM THE SKY
IT WAS THE TIME IN THE WAR WHEN THE GERMANS WERE MAKING REGULAR VISITS EVERY NIGHT, WHERE WE HAD TO HURRY OUR EVENING MEALS AND RETIRE TO THE SHELTER, BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS ARRIVED RIGHT ON TIME .
THE SIRENS HAD SOUNDED AND WE BRACED OURSELVES FOR ANOTHER NIGHT OF TERROR, BUT THIS PARTICULAR NIGHT WAS A BIT DIFFERENT,
A BOMB HAD DROPPED ON A LARGE GROCERS WARE -HOUSE IN PECKHAM LONDON.
HUNDREDS OF TINS OF PILCHARDS AND HERRINGS IN TOMATOE SAUCE, RAINED DOWN ON THE SURROUNDING STREETS WITH A TREMENDOUS CLATTER, PEOPLE WERE PICKING UP THE BENT AND BATTERED TINS THAT HAD LANDED,WELL THROUGH THE NIGHT, HOURS AFTER THE INCIDENT, OTHER FOLK ARRIVED FROM THE SURROUNDING STREETS, HELPING THEMSELVES TO THIS AMAZING BONUS.
IT WAS A MYSTERY HOW MORE DAMAGE WAS NOT INCURRED TO THE SLATE ROOFS OF THE HOUSES, BUT IT WOULD SEEM MOST OF THE STUFF HAD LANDED IN THE STREETS, THERE WERE BEEFEX CUBES, AND VARIOUS TINNED MEAT ITEMS, I DID HEAR OF A CASE OF CONDENSED MILK LANDING IN SOMEONES GARDEN.
THE NEXT DAY THE GROCERY FIRM SENT IT'S REPS ROUND KNOCKING ON DOORS ENQUIRING HAD ANY OF THEIR GOODS LANDED IN THE BACK GARDENS OF THE HOUSES AROUND, BUT OF COURSE NONE HAD!
