This story begins just a few months before the outbreak of war. I remember the Warwickshire Yeomanry being called up and somebody calling at our house to tell us that my brother,RSM Roger Hadland, was embarking at the Warwick Goods yard. I went with my mother to the goods yard and I remember being quite frightened as there was horses and men everywhere and it was chaotic. The Warwickshire Yeomanry was to go to Palestine, and Cyprus where the horses were disposed of and my brother transferred to the RASC, in the Pack Transport Company in order for him to keep his horse. From Cyprus he went to North Africa and then to Italy attached to the American Army. He fought right through Italy, including Monte Cassino. It was here that during the very heavy fighting that my brother's horse was shot from underneath him. He was to remain in Italy until the end of the war and returned to England after 6 years away from home.
