I was interested in the story about a man who was out watching an air raid and had to jump into the shelter when a bomb fell nearby.

Grandad did ARP work, and was out getting people into shelters when a bomb fell in Billingham Bottom and he had to do the same thing. He was helping the people next door, who had a baby.

In the early 1970s I went to college in Hull. This is a major seaport, and the cleaning lady in the Hall of Residence told me that it was badly bombed during the war, but the news bulletins of the time would only say that a Northern city had been bombed.
I do not know if this was security or to keep up morale, but the residents obviously knew it was them.
