Christine Vaughan,

Children’s memories WW2.

Christine & Sheila Dyson.

Location — Grenoside Sheffield.

The day War broke out, September 3rd 1939, I was 7yrs old. I remember my mum making blackout curtains and remember very clearly on the night of the blitz, my Dad had set off for work at the GPO in Fitzalan Square. We were in the air raid shelter and Mum had gone back to the house to fetch some new coats we had made. A farmer from higher up the road called at the house to tell us my Dad was in a shelter down the road, so we knew he was safe. He walked to work and found the devastation, including the bombed out Marples Pub.

My sister and I then were evacuated to stay with my Aunty at Hoylandswaine, Nr. Penistone until the bombing had stopped.
