I was sent to a small village in South Devon during the wartime to work on a Radar Station. The
RAF and Navy were only down the road from our camp. There were also some American Troops
based near to us on a secret location. We used to ocassionally visit them.
One night we went out and got back quite late, and it was the blackout so it was so dark that we
got completely lost. We ended up at another camp at 3am in the morning!
We also used to go out to the local pub some nights. I remember one night when there was a big
fight that broke out between the American and English troops because of the shortage of girls!
They all got court marshalled.
Entertainment
There wasn鈥檛 really much to do where I was during the war because of the village where I was
based. The nearest town to us was Plymouth and that was being heavily bombed. If we wanted
to go to Plymouth for a night out we would hitch a ride. It was much safer to hitch hike in those
days and there were only two buses a week to Plymouth. I used to go to dance halls in Plymouth
and dance with the American鈥檚 and the English men. There weren鈥檛 many girls though so there
wasn鈥檛 much romance!
Wartime Style
When we were on duty at camp, we would have to wear our uniforms which were navy blue
tunics, trousers and a horrible hat! If we were off duty, because we were such a small camp, we
could wear our civvie clothes, which for me was a blouse and skirt. We used to
have a machine to curl our hair out. They were
uncomfortable and your hair was strapped to the machine.
I once went out when my hair was done and it was so
stiff, I couldn鈥檛 even get a comb through it!
We didn鈥檛 have much in those days but we had a lot
of fun!
