Mr Ray Caradeuc interviewed by Margaret Le Cras
Transcribers note : Transcription difficult at times because interviewer was nearer the microphone and her interjections sometimes upstage Mr Le Caradeuc, who is rather faint. Where the interviewer鈥檚 comments are relevant they have been transcribed in full.
Ray Caradeuc. Ah yes. I鈥檒l tell you of another little episode there. And
We were doing crystal sets after that, besides, on a small scale, it had to be for people you could trust. The Germans had horses, what do you call it 鈥 cavalry, Well, they were coming up this hill at Torteval, Pleinmont, Rocquaine, actually, [ ] Les Courtils?,
I鈥︹︹. Les Coutillets
Ray Caradeuc. At the Coudraie. We figured a crystal set, because her husband was deaf and dumb, and it gave her something, and she could relate to him, she had a sign language, and the German cavalry came up, up the road, the German officer that was heading the cavalry, he saw a lady with headphones on her head, and he jumped off his horse and raced in there, he couldn鈥檛 find nothing, not a thing, and he was [smacking] around, and she said 鈥淵ou must have been imagining it鈥 because [ ] find nothing. And he got somebody to come up, and they were two hours there, do you know what she had done? She was going to cook cabbage, [ shoved it in ] put the cabbage on top
I鈥︹︹. and it was in the saucepan?
Ray Caradeuc. Boiling away. 鈥淗e said why have you not had your dinner鈥, she said 鈥淚鈥檓 not hungry鈥.
I鈥︹︹. Gosh, eh, she was quick.
Ray Caradeuc. Of course, we had to [ ] so after that little episode we went back and [fit] another one, and in half an hour we come back and [ ] her, we thought, the poor [ ] she went through, eh. With the Germans.
I鈥︹ It was all boiled.
