In 1944 I was living in Yew Tree flats in the Horsham Road Cranleigh and on one Sunday morning lying in bed I heard the Doodlebug come down and crash just behind where I lived. Soot came down the chimney and windows and doors flew off. When I got up I realised that it had hit the Junior School and virtually destroyed it. The East window of the Church was also blown out and people were sweeping up the pieces. The clock from the Cranleigh Motor Company had blown out and finished up on the other side of the road. During the war I worked at the back of the Motor Company in a garage where jettison petrol tanks were made from a fibre composition and dope which had a very strong smell. The Foreman was Mr Charlie Jacobs who made sure the work was done to the right standard. We also made target tanks which were used for artillery practice. One day I took my turn on the factory roof as a lookout when a VI Doodlebug passed overhead and hit the local Gas Works which caused a great explosion and one lady was killed.
