I was about nineteen at the time and it was about 1943. When we arrived at Ferryhill station from Darlington it was on a very long passenger train. It was blackout. I had been to a dance in Darlington with my boyfriend. The train was the midnight train from Darlington. When we got off the train it was very dark and as I thought I was going to the exit it wasn't. When I crossed over the platform I dropped down onto the railway lines. My boyfriend wondered where I was and I said "down on the track". He answered "give me your hand and I'll pull you up". When I got hold of his hand he didn't pull me up, instead I pulled him down and he was on the track with me. It was so dark we couldn't see each other. What we had to do was feel our way along the platform until it tapered down to the floor. Only then were we able to get back up onto it and slowly edge our way to the exit. Not long after that the relationship folded as he was not impressed with being dragged onto the railway track. We were very lucky that no trains were coming as it was the main line to London.
