Almost every night air raid sirens sounded and we all had to leave our houses and go up the nearby hills and fields and stay until we heard the All CLEAR . Then we were allowed to return home hoping that our house would be still standing. As school children we all had to carry our gasmasks everywhere we went. We also had air raid drill during school hours. There were barrage balloons flying overhead and on the ground were large water tanks in case of fires started by incendiary devices, that were being dropped by German planes .

We also had food rationing, each person was issued with a ration book to entitle you to a very limited amount of the available food. We all carried our ration books with us just in case the shop would get something nice in

I remember vividly having to leave our home,in Alliance Drive because of unexploded bombs in the back gardens. We were taken to a church hall at Ligoniel to stay overnight but we never got back home for the next six months. The next morning we were transported in army lorries as evacuees to Bushmills County Antrim.

All during the war years my husband鈥檚 three sisters had very dangerous jobs in the Fire Service. Amy drove an army lorry among the worst fires allover the city. Lily was stationed at Ardoyne Fire Station Agnes became leading firewoman in Londonderry later..
