Frank Gill was conscripted at Berwick on tweed on the 3rd of June 1943. He was an ARP cyclist. He was based at Salford town hall. On October 1940 the base was bombed. Frank was about 20 yards away in the basement when the bomb fell. Frank had to cycle 3 miles to report the news at the head quarters at Manchester racecourse.
Frank was called up to go to Anzio landing. He had to march up a hill for 3 or 4 miles, in the process of that they were shelled. Then they had to dig their own trench. He was in there for 3 or 4 weeks without relief. Then a shell landed 4 or 5 yards away from his trench. Frank and his friend were blown of the trench. Then after that they were took back to Naples on hospital ship. On the ship they were bombed and shelled but managed to get back. Then they were taken in to hospital to recover from shell shock. After that they didn鈥檛 go back, to fighting but they were down graded and given a base job. From then on they were moved to Tripoli. There they were looking after young soldiers that were going to the Far East. They then came home demoblition. Whist waiting, he was in Hounslow in London. He was finally demoded in Aldershot. He was then released on the 11th of June 1947.
