I was working for Robinson Cleaver during the war. Robinson Cleavers was a shop but it鈥檚 not there anymore. One day we had to go out onto the Dublin Road in Belfast as an air raid siren went off. There weren鈥檛 air raid shelters everywhere but there was one on the Dublin Road close to us. We sat in there until the all clear went and then we were allowed to get out.
I remember during a blackout that the bus drivers had to switch off the lights on the bus. The conductor had to walk in front of the bus with a white cloth and the driver drove slowly behind him. We travelled from Belfast all the way to Lisburn like that, with the bus more or less creeping all the way. The siren must have gone off and the planes overhead might have seen the lights on the bus. They were after factories in Belfast and industry in the city which was important to the war effort.
