[The Chaumiere Catholic School from Guernsey had been evacuated to Moseley Hall in Cheshire. Beryl Merrien was assisting with the care of the Children]
Father Pat Bleach heard about a scheme which was being set up in America called Foster Parent Plan for war children. This involved Americans offering to sponsor children in England who were deprived materially because of the war. He was able to get the children at Moseley Hall included in this scheme. This made a huge difference to our financial problems. Each child was allocated a foster parent in America who used to send the children letters and parcels and each month the children would write back to America. One little girl, Paulette Le Mescam, was given Mrs. Roosevelt - wife of the American President - as her sponsor and used to receive parcels from her. For many of the children this was the only mail they received except some of the rare Red Cross messages from Guernsey.
One of my main tasks was the co-ordination of all the correspondence with the Foster Plan in London.
