Mrs Doris Carré interviewed by Margaret Le Cras.
Edited excerpt from a transcript of the of taped interview

I………. Right, we’re talking now to Mrs Carré, and Mrs Carré, you were here during the Occupation, weren’t you?
Mrs Carré. Yes, I was.
I………. And where were you living?
Mrs Carré. At the Landes du Marché. That’s near the Camp du Roi
I………. And you were here the whole of the war, were you?
Mrs Carré. Yes, we were just married, three days before the war broke out.
I………. Did you marry because the war was going to start?
Mrs Carré. No, we’d built a new house, so we were just in our house
I………. So it had been planned to marry then?
Mrs Carré. Ah, yes,
I………. You didn’t think of evacuating?
Mrs Carré. No, not at all. And we didn’t like leaving our parents
We were growers, and he was working in the greenhouses. So the States took over the greenhouses, and had someone then to oversee and to tell us what to grow. We used to grow potatoes, and carrots, so we were allowed to keep a certain amount for ourselves, which we kept a little more than we should have. So he put some of the potatoes in bags, and the flooring under our hall, it was quite deep, so that he could crawl under, and hide them.
I………. So you had your own little store, really.
Mrs Carré. That’s right
Voice Where was the trap to get under the floor?
Mrs Carré. Right by the front door, under the mat.
I………. And nobody found it.
Voice What else did you hide down there
Mrs Carré. Our bread bin. If we went out, we used to put our bread bin down there, because there were so many robberies, for food, so that’s what we used to do, put the bread bin…
I………. Did you have a wireless?
Mrs Carré. yes, we did keep one.
I………. But before that, when you were allowed to keep the wireless, did you listen to the news in the morning? Can you remember? I was told that, when the news came on, they played the National Anthems of the countries that were Occupied? and I didn’t know if you remembered that?
Mrs Carré. No…
I………. You can’t remember that.
Mrs Carré. No, but I know that we did keep a radio, so we listened to the news
