Doris in her uniform
This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War web site by Karen Elmes at the Building Exploratory on behalf of Doris Adams and has been added to the site with her permission. She fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
When Doris was 20 years old she had to register to do something for the war effort, and this allowed Doris to train as a nurse. Before the war Doris wanted to become a nurse but had been unable to because her parents did not want her to. She signed a four year contract with the London County Council and went into training. She was sent to work as a school nurse for evacuated orphans who were staying at a stately home in Heathfield, East Sussex, and went on to work at a sanatorium in Colindale for people who had tuberculosis. Whilst she was in charge of a ward at the sanatorium Doris met her husband who had worked as a nurse in the Air Force. Both Doris and her husband were pacifists, which is why they both took up nursing.
