Although my father is quite old now, one of his memories is of the sound of the ram-jet engines of the V1 flying bombs. He says that when he heard the sound of the doodlebugs (as they were nicknamed) going over he can remember thinking that he hoped the engine would keep going. This is because as soon as the engine stopped, everyone in the vicinity knew that the bomb would plummet down, causing death and mayhem somewhere close!
