When we were young children my sister was invited to the local air base at Grove for a party hosted by the American servicemen. She invited two of he soldiers to our home and one in particular became a frequent visitor before D-Day. We lost touch a few years after the war but managed to trace him and just recently the daughter of one of his friends, and have been to America to visit him and plan another visit soon . Good friends out of extreme circumstances.
we saw little of the war in the cente of England but I remember convoys going through the town before D-Day and one 'limping ' German bomber overhead the day after the 'ack-ack 'gun had been taken away from the local tennis court!
