I remember being woken by my father in the middle of the night. The blast nearby had jammed our door and my father was trying to open it. There was a large crater in the field opposite. My mother got tangled in the sheets and put her foot on a piece of red hot shrapnel. She had to go to hospital for treatment. Years afterwards, mother was removing slivers of glass from the headboard of the bed.
Being so young, this was all a big adventure for me. My sister was seven years older than me and understood what was happening better than I.
Near where we lived in London Colney there were a number of large aircraft manufacturers, but we weren't evacuated. Fortunately they weren't hit.
I remember rationing; having to put a blue cross in the ration book. I think we grew some of our own food too, in the garden.
