鈥淚 remember my husband was sent to the Isle of Wight on active service. He had arranged for me to go and stay with him for a week, but two days into the visit, Edward had notification that he was on the move. What would I do?
Some of my foster family were in London, which was not too far away (via train) and so it was arranged that I could go and stay with them for the remaining holidays. I hadn鈥檛 been to where they lived before, hadn鈥檛 travelled a lot and didn鈥檛 know London well, so agreed to meet a young cousin of 14, Ted, under the clock at Waterloo station.
He took my case, I had my handbag, and off we went to board the train heading for Stamford Bridge, but the doors shut before Ted had got on!
I panicked as the train pulled out of the station but luckily a kind passenger told me where I needed to get off. Once at Stamford Bridge no one recognised the address I had, but finally a milkman came to my rescue.
Relieved to get to my destination, I found a warm welcome waiting for me, but where was Ted? He turned up hours later, in tears, saying he had 鈥榣ost Margaret鈥. Of course not! Ted was told I had arrived safe and sound and had been drinking tea - the tale caused much merriment and teasing!
I stayed for a further five days. On the final night there were loads of bombs in the area, but not dropping close enough to necessitate going to the shelter, so said the family. I was extremely relived to return home the following day!!
Later in the war Ted came to Shropshire as a private evacuee and lived with us. About the time he was due to return to London, several bombs were dropped around Beckbury and one landed at Salt, Bernal Green and one at the end of Cosford aerodrome. An anxious Ted hurriedly but reluctantly returned to London!鈥
