CAMOUFLAGE ON AIRFIELDS
The firm I worked for was a building and decorating business. We had government contracts to paint buildings on airfields in camouflage patterns.
Not only the buildings were camouflaged, but also the grass of the landing strips. The grass was sprayed with paint of different suitable shades to look as though they were smaller fields divided by hedges.
There were small gangs of men, who worked on airstrips on both sides of the border, from west to east coast and down into North Yorkshire. This was an ongoing task:, especially in summer, when the grass was growing and had to be continually resprayed.
