'I was also about seven when the war started. 1 can remember most of our school lessons taking place in air raid shelters, damp and smelly, horrible. 1 was old enough to have a proper gas mask, we had to take them everywhere. My brother was two years older than me and we had to look after ourselves as dad was in the RAF regiment and mum worked at Police HQ as a civilian. My brother cooked and I did the housework. We had lots of freedom and we collected any war stuff, bullets, shells and bits of planes. 1 can remember cycling to see crashed doodlebugs. For a young boy it was very exciting.'
