asked by senior officer to take 15cwt truck with
driver to cross paths in jungle to prevent hunters from entering jungle as regimental guns were firing in area . Arrived at cross paths armed with pistol and ammunition wrapped in brown paper package.
Got out of vehicle, sat with back to wheel of vehicle and began reading penguine book.
My driver Charlie Yee happened to be half Chinese, who managed to get out of Singapore before Japs invaded.
Whilst engrossed in reading my paper back
Charlie suddenly called out " oh look sir there's
a tiger" I didn't look up thinking Charlie was having a bit of a lark, butnI raised my eyes from my book and there it was , a very large Bengal Tiger, astride the Jungle path, one foot in front of the other, huge head looking towards us, as I was staring at it, the beast slowly walked into the Jungle.
I immediatly called out to Charlie, "quick Charlie, run up the path and look at it's pad marks in the dust", thinking we could tell the lads back at the regiment. As he was nearly there, we heard a low rumbling growl. Whereupon Charlie raced back to the truck as fast as his legs could carry him and I tugged my pistol out, and with shaking hands tried to load it without success, and calling out to Charlie "let's get out of here."
