I was born in Sunderland in 1927. When war was declared in 1939, I was evacuated to Leyburn, North Yorkshire. February 1940 I rejoined my family who had moved to Cannock. In Feb 42 I started at the Post Office at Hednesford as a boy messenger (telegram boy).
Some telegrams were reporting the sad news regarding their family and some were good news.
On 16 August 1945 I was called up (VJ+1) into the RAF. My trade was Clerk GD postal. In Feb 46, I was flown out to India in the bomb bay of a Liberator, via Marseilles, Lybia, Cairo, Karaichi. My posting to RAFPOST Bombay.
In Sept 46, I was posted to 45 Squadron Madras. The Squadron was moved to Ceylon in Dec 46 when India became independent.
In August 47 I was posted to Galle. I returned home in 1948 for Demob.
I thoroughly I enjoyed my term in the RAF.
