Sugar Beet.
With food shortages, Mum and Dad became very inventive. One thing they did was to roast pieces of sugar beet to make a breakfast cereal to have with milk - when available. They also used to boil sugar beet in front of the fire so that the liquid would reduce to make sugar. On one such occasion the boiling liquid spilled on to my legs so that Dad had to break curfew to run to the ambulance station. I then had the privilege of being taken by horse drawn ambulance, to the States' Emergency Hospital in the C芒tel.
