Whilst living in Brockhurst Road, Castle Bromwich, we had a Prisoner of War camp at the end of the road, on the site of the Castle Bromwich Golf Club. There was also an anti-aircraft gun site on the course. Our house was regularly peppered with shrapnel from the exploding shells.

Message 1 - Castle Bromwich

Posted on: 24 July 2004 by Freddy Dyke

TO Paul Riley,
Having read your contibution from the Cosford Road Show, you seem to be in doubt about the Spitfires that were pushed across the Chester Road at
Castle Bromwich in B'Ham.
The reason was they were produced at the factory of Vickers that was on the opposite side of the road to the
airfield [neither of these are still there]I believe. These planes were pushed across the road to the airfield to be tested by the chief test pilot [Alex Henshaw] before they were passed on to the RAF squadrons for action against the 'Jerries'.
I hope this 'Info' solves your query.
Best Wishes.
Freddy.

Dear Freddy,

Having seen your posting I wonder if you worked at Castle Bromwich or indeed, grew up nearby?

I am researching for a forthcoming documentary on the factory, its workers and the people who lived in its shadow and would be delighted to hear from you.
