During air raids, we sometimes went for a walk. I was going to my friends for the night walking along the Old Shoreham Road in Portslade while the raid was on. We heard an aeroplane behind us, quite high, didn't think much about it then we suddenly heard the whine when he was diving. We looked aound and thought "Oh, he's going to machine gun us" and ran like blazes to the next bit of road, nowhere else to go, and an ARP man was there and grabbed us and pushed us down, pram and all. As he did that, we saw the bombs drop on the gasworks, a sheet of flame went right along. I thought a lot of people might have been killed.
I went straight back and waited for my Dad to come home, who worked there. I asked people "Seen my Dad? Is he alright?" People didn't know, everyone that came up I asked the same question. At six o'clock my Dad walked in, I said "Oh Dad, you're alright then?" He said "All right? Course I'm alright!" It turned out that no-one was killed, just an old horse, poor devil.
