This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Richard Jackson on behalf of Mary Dewhurst and has been added to the site with her permission. Mary fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.
William Dewhurst and Mary Dewhurst married September 30th 1939 maybe the first in uniform. William called up in August 1939. I was lecturing to St John's Ambulance and ARP on first aid, decontamination precedure in the event of mustard gas being used. I worked all through the war. I took myself to hospital to have my children at the time my husband was in Holland on the "bridge" I didn't even get field cards. I didn't have any news for 15 weeks before my second child was born. He was six months old when my husband was demobed. My husband was 91 in August he is very frail now and needs constant care. I am 90 in October and very disabled. But considering how badly shellshocked he was when he returned, we are fortunate and we thank God for our lives together thus far.
I must now say how informtive your programmes are. Many thanks for your interest and I am so pleased to know that all these brave men are not forgotten.
