I remember the dreadful week when Manchester was blitzed. I remember, one night being carried out of our shelter, which was indoors, into the garden by my father to see the light of the city on fire. It was as bright as dawn even though the city was 6 miles away.
I remember another day when the air raid siren went as soon as I got to school with my gas mask, and I had to go straight into the air raid shelter so we had no school until it had all finished.
