On August 27th 1944 at 7a.m a flying bomb(V1)dropped in the playground of the Council Infants School which completely destroyed it and caused damage to surrounding property including the East window of the church.
The Reverend H L Johnston was in the rectory grounds at the time and suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital. Mercifully it being a Sunday no-one was in the school in the time and church services had not begun.
Other accommodation was found for the pupils and education recommenced on Wednesday Aug 30th.
It would be good to hear from any pupils living today who can recall what it was like to live through these times.
