When I was 14 in 1939 the war broke out. I left school and was advised to go to night school, which was Eastborough School, Leeds Road, Dewsbury. We were advised when air raid warnings went to go to the air raid shelter across Leeds Road. This particular night the air raid warnings went so we came out of school to go across the road to the shelter and we could see a big German bomber firing down at the anti-aircraft guns at the top of Caulms Wood, and the anti-aircraft guns firing up at the bomber. Later on, in the air raid shelter, there was a big bang and the ground shook, and people were coming in with blackened faces and in a distressed condition. Later on we found that there had been a landmine dropped at Wakefield Road and a few people had been killed. A mist came down and the aircraft left, and we were able to walk home through the broken glass and rubble.
