I was a member of the Air Raid Precaution (ARP) in Belfast before the war started. We knew that war was going to be declared so we prepared for it. We had meetings every week, which were held in North Howard Street School, where we learnt first aid, blackout procedures and emergency procedures when bombs came.
Spotter planes started to be seen flying above Belfast, so most nights of the week we had to patrol the streets and knock on peoples doors if we saw any lights coming through their windows. When I knocked on people鈥檚 doors to tell them to cover their windows properly most of them asked me to come inside and do it for them!
I left the ARP just as the war was starting. My husband wanted me to look after the children at home.
