My lasting Memory of World War II is鈥n July 1942 I was 10 years old and on arriving home from school, I was met with the son of a neighbour, who told me I had to go to his house. On the way, he said 鈥測our Dad is dead鈥. I said, 鈥渄on鈥檛 tell lies鈥. His Mother said I had to take my brother to our Grandma who lived in Beech Street, Peel Green. I don鈥檛 remember how we got there, we lived on the Vicarage - I can only assume the tram. The journey remains a blank but when I got there my Mother, Grandma and Granddad were in tears. My Mother and Grandma must have been telling us some acceptable story鈥y Granddad said 鈥淢aggie 鈥ell the child the truth. It was a fact that my Daddy was dead. Had died 12 July 1942. In 1992, I visited his grave in Glencairn Cemetery Simontown, Cape Town South Africa.
