My lasting Memory of World War II is鈥n July 1942 I was 10 years old and on arriving home from school, I was met with the son of a neighbour, who told me I had to go to his house. On the way, he said 鈥測our Dad is dead鈥. I said, 鈥渄on鈥檛 tell lies鈥. His Mother said I had to take my brother to our Grandma who lived in Beech Street, Peel Green. I don鈥檛 remember how we got there, we lived on the Vicarage - I can only assume the tram. The journey remains a blank but when I got there my Mother, Grandma and Granddad were in tears. My Mother and Grandma must have been telling us some acceptable story鈥y Granddad said 鈥淢aggie 鈥ell the child the truth. It was a fact that my Daddy was dead. Had died 12 July 1942. In 1992, I visited his grave in Glencairn Cemetery Simontown, Cape Town South Africa.
