My Nan, Vera, told me this story a few years before she died.

When she heard that war had been announced she knew that food might get a bit short. Since she had four little children to feed, she decided to go to the local grocer's shop to stock up before things got tight. While she was there she saw a big bottle of yellow food colouring.

"Well" she said, "I bought that too". When I asked her what on earth she wanted it for, she replied to me, "well if the wartime food was going to taste nasty at least it would look pretty!"
