I was born in 1939 in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire. This is my earliest recollection. We had family in Coventry. My mother and father, Marion and Walter Fowler, were taking my brothers and sister and myself to visit them as we had just heard that there had been another raid there. On the way, we got as far as Leicester and i remember there being no buses into Coventry . We were wandering around trying to find a way to get there when i saw this huge "monster" come out of a side street, it was a tram, i had never seen one before.
We eventually found transport, it was a fish lorry and we travelled to the outskirts of Coventry on it. To this day if i smell fish, i can't eat it. We had to leave the lorry because the bomb craters in the road were so big that nothing could get pass, so we had to carry on on foot. The smell of sulphur and burning was overpowering. We got to my family's road in Walgrove and there was nothing there, just rubble. You can imagine how my mum and dad felt. Their relatives,my Uncle Jack, Auntie Dorothy and their son Jeff all lived there. Uncle Jack was away fighting in the war. We wandered around asking people about them, asking a A.R.P warden amongst others. He showed us to a place where everyone had gathered and there we found them safe and well.
