Sergeant William Cecil Carswell, World War Two, 1939-1945

This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Susan Stefiuk of Age Concern Shropshire Telford and Wrekin on behalf of Mrs Olive Gittens and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

The Military Medal has been awarded to Lance Sergeant William Cecil Carswell, Royal Artillery, St Rimers between 09.00 — 10.00 hours, 29th November, Lance Sergeant Carswell was Number 1 of an Artillery Gun under continuous enemy shell fire.

Shells were dropping near his gun and the Command Post of the next Battery which was close at hand received a direct hit. He kept his detachment working quickly and steadily at their gun drill in our own Continuous Counter Battery Programme.

Through this period by sheer force of example, knowing that the Programme would be impaired if the detachment took cover, his coolness and devotion to duty and utter disregard of danger on this occasion was an example to all.

November 1943
